Sometimes, what you can’t see will kill you…

Kendra is surprised when she is visited by Dr. Charles Waldridge, the researcher who gave her sight through a revolutionary medical procedure developed by England''s Night Watch Project. All is not well with the brilliant surgeon; he’s troubled by something he can’t discuss with Kendra. When Waldridge disappears the very night he visits her, Kendra is on the case, recruiting government agent-for-hire Adam Lynch to join her on a trail that leads to the snow-packed California mountains. There they make a gruesome discovery: the corpse of one of Dr. Waldridge’s associates. But it’s only the first casualty in a white-knuckle confrontation with a deadly enemy who will push Kendra to the limits of her abilities. Soon she must fight for her very survival as she tries to stop the killing…and unearth the shocking secret of Night Watch.

Iris and Roy Johansen’s fourth Kendra Michaels book, “Night Watch,” is their strongest yet — the kind of wickedly designed, expertly conducted roller coaster ride the Johansens patented a while back.

The central twist to this excellent series is that Kendra spent the first two decades of her life blind, then gained sight after an experimental stem cell procedure. As a result, the brash music therapist/consulting sleuth perceives the world around her very differently from those who have been able to see their entire lives, picking up on endless subtle sights, sounds, and smells that pass everybody else by.

While this unique background was explained in the first three books, we never got the full story of how gaining the ability to see changed Kendra’s life and set her on a course to become the San Diego area’s high-maintenance Sherlock Holmes. In “Night Watch,” that past comes rushing back at her when the brilliant researcher responsible for giving her the gift of sight reenters her life one step ahead of shadowy forces connected to his work.

It’s Kendra’s “Bourne” moment, and she’s soon scrambling to unravel a series of mysteries surrounding the game-changing advance in medicine that has had such a momentous impact on her own life.

Along the way, she steamrolls over cops at crime scenes, draws elaborate deductions from tiny clues, and engages in lots of spirited “Will they or won’t they?” with hard-guy freelance intelligence operator Adam Lynch, who has assigned himself the uphill task of keeping Kendra out of danger.

A new character comes close to stealing the show at a couple of points — to the extent that might just call for a spinoff if the Johansens are so inclined.

The worst thing about this series? Waiting for the next book to come out.

Love Iris Johansen books and the Kendra Michaels series are always interesting to read. Some twists in this one and I finished the book in 2 days. I kept picking it up every chance I got and couldn''t wait to see exactly how it would end. One small thing is the development of the Kendra character: she is sometimes annoying and self-righteous. The fact that she instantly picks up on the littlest clue, due to her history of blindness, is very interesting. However, the cops are colored as very dim-witted when ever she is around. It''s a little thing and didn''t really take away from the story, for me.

One wonders about the advances in medical research after reading this book. Knowing that quite a lot of the information in this book is based on actual advances in medicine, is mind boggling. However, coupled with this is also the downside - the greed that goes hand in hand with creating something that others desperately need.
Once again the Johansens have written a nail biting story that resonates. Kendra Michaels gets her own dangerous story after helping Eve Duncan in her series. This is a gritty, consuming read that secures both Johansens'' place at the top of mystery writing list.

Kendra Michaels is a thoroughly annoying, self-righteous and, quite frankly, unbelievable protagonist. The premise is that she is exceptionally smart and intuitive because she was blind until the age of 19 so she was able to hone her remaining senses and still continues to use them ten years later. How, then, can she make such stupid and ridiculous decisions and while doing so, be such a heinous bitch to everybody who loves her? I''m finished with this series.

UGH! This woman, the lead character, Kendra is so fake and unreal! She reacted so horribly, repeatedly to people around her trying to help that I just gave up with her and this book, which I have NEVER done before! Also, the writing is very elementary and predictable.

The story is actually good, I find the writing style to be almost at high school level. The same use of the word "dammit" by almost everyone of her characters is aggravating as well as the over use of the way a character responds "dryly" or "wryly".
